Signs that You Need to Change Your Brake Pads

by Aapo Perala

Sometimes, it is hard to tell when there is a mechanical problem on your car. Such mechanical problems occur quietly, and you won't notice anything until there is a major breakdown. Thankfully, brake pads will always let you know when you need to change them. Constant, strange movements will remind you that the pads have a problem, unlike many other mechanical issues that have no warning signs. As you use your car, here are a few things that will show that you need to change your brake pads:

Physical Damage on the Pads

Brake pads are small, dark grey discs fitted on the wheel. You can see them through the spaces between the spokes of the rim. When you press the brake pedal, it generates hydraulic pressure. This pressure is transferred to the calliper clamps, which squeeze the two brake pads together to slow the motion of the wheel, bringing the car to a halt.

The pressure resulting from the calliper clamps makes the brake pads wear out due to friction. This friction makes the pads reduce in size, and the braking pressure may be too much for them to handle. This leads to small cracks on the pads. Every time you inspect your wheels, check the brake pads for any minute cracks and have them replaced, especially if you have used them for a long time.

The Car Is Pulling To One Side

Often, when the car pulls to one side without you turning the steering wheel, this indicates a wheel alignment problem. However, it can also mean that one pair of your brake pads is worn out and needs to be replaced. For a wheel alignment problem, the car will pull to one side when you are driving at a constant speed without applying the brakes. On the other hand, a pair of worn out brake pads will make the car pull to one side every time you apply the brakes. It shows that one pair of the pads is worn out, and too much pressure is imposed on it. In such a case, you should replace the worn out pair of pads.

A Vibrating Brake Pedal

If you press the brake pedal and feel some pulsation or vibrations on the pedal, then it is a sign that your brake pads are worn out. This is because of warping of the brake pedal due to prolonged friction. In addition, it can also show that the brake pads are loose. In either case, the best choice is to take your car into the shop.
